After four decades of dedication to the retail world, Don and Joan Logan, founders of the iconic Logans Complex near Cloughmills, have decided to retire, marking the end of an era for one of Northern Ireland’s retail landmarks.

The Logans Complex, synonymous with luxury fashion and high-end wedding attire, started as a standalone store—Logans Fashions.

Over the years, it grew into a sprawling shopping destination that now houses around 20 businesses.

The eight-acre site, located on the busy Frosses Road with daily traffic of up to 18,000 vehicles, has become a cornerstone of North Antrim’s retail sector.

The founders’ decision to step away comes with the sale of the premises and surrounding land, although Logans Fashions itself will continue to operate under its current owner, Ivor Boyd. The store will remain open for business, ensuring continuity for its loyal customer base.

Plans for development

The site’s potential continues to grow, with planning permission recently granted for exciting new developments, including a petrol station and a fast-food restaurant.

This expansion opens the door to fresh opportunities for the Cloughmills area.

The sale is being managed by AMG Property Sales, with AMG agent Bill Thompson highlighting the significance of the site, “Logans Fashions is synonymous with quality wedding attire and high-end product. The Logans Complex has grown to become North Antrim’s primary out-of-town shopping centre. With the owners in their 80s, they are quite rightly ready to enjoy retirement. Interest in the site has been strong, with a range of imaginative ideas on the table.”

Community reflections

Mid and East Antrim DUP councillor Audrey Wales paid tribute to Don and Joan Logan, reflecting on their contribution to the local area, “I would like to take this opportunity to wish Don and Joan the very best for whatever they have planned for the rest of their lives and thank them for establishing Logans. I’ve been shopping there for years. The staff are excellent, the clothes are on trend, and the selection is fantastic. It’s also a great place to meet people and grab a coffee—it’s more than just a shopping destination.”

She added that the sale represents “a new beginning and new opportunities for the Cloughmills area.”

Independent retailers thriving

Despite challenges in the retail sector, including the administration of major brands like House of Fraser, independent retailers like Logans have held their ground.

A 2018 Retail NI report revealed that 60% of local shoppers preferred independent stores, with many citing better customer service, convenience, and a desire to support local businesses as key motivators.

Logans Complex has long embodied these values, and its success over the decades is a testament to the vision and hard work of its founders. As the site changes hands, it remains a beacon of opportunity for the Cloughmills community and beyond.
